New recognition for CWRU AIDS research. The School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University has been selected as one of three new national federally-funded Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR). The new center will receive a $3 million grant during the next five years from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The grant will enable the school to continue existing basic and clinical AIDS research.

CFAR grants are awarded to institutions that demonstrate ongoing HIV-related research. CWRU is currently home to an AIDS clinical trials unit that tests the effectiveness of drugs on HIV patients, and an international program studying AIDS in Uganda.

The grant will involve 26 researchers from the medical school's division of infectious diseases in the departments of medicine, biochemistry, epidemiology, molecular biology and microbiology, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry and chemistry.

Thursday Summer Supper Seminars sponsored by the Peace House Steering Committee start Thursday, July 23 and continue through Thursday, August 4. Topics for discussion include human rights in Guatemala, the South Africa elections, the dumping of radioactive water into Lake Erie, and healing incest with art. Bring a casserole dish, salad or dessert, plate flatware and cup for the potluck at 6:30 pm. Beverages are provided. The program begins at 7:30 pm. All programs are free and are held at the Cleveland Friends Meeting House at 10916 Magnolia Dr. in University Circle, Cleveland. For more information, call 231-4245.

Hometown girls. Odd Girl Out will perform at Cleveland Heights' Cain Park Saturday, June 18 at 8:30 pm in the Evans Amphiteater. Odd Girl Out mixes their own blend of folk rock with covers by bands like R.E.M. and the Indigo Girls. Tickets, at $6, can be ordered by calling Cain Park at 3713000.

The Cleveland Mediation Center has a Domestic Relations Mediation Program that offers support to partners who have decided to separate or have child custody disputes. Mediation is a voluntary process that helps individuals create their own solutions to problems. Trained divorce mediators will mediate free of charge to people who qualify. A sliding scale fee applies to those with higher incomes. For more information call Ruth Rosenberg, director of the Domestic Relations Mediations Program, at 771-7297.

Proud police. The New York City Police Department will host its First Annual Lesbian and Gay Pride in Policing Display from June 15 through July 13. Sponsored in conjunction with the Gay Officer's Action League (GOAL) and the Community Affairs Division, the exhibit will focus on gay pride in policing while exemplifying the diversity and professionalism of this department. The exhibit will be on view on the second floor mezzanine of Police Headquarters, One Police Plaza, Manhattan.

Police Commissioner William Bratton and Deputy Commissioner of Community Affairs, Walter Alicea, will officiate at a ceremony to commemorate this historical event on Wednesday, June 29, at 3 pm, in the Police Headquarters Auditorium. For additional information, contact Police Officers Fran DeBendictis or Diane Harnisher at 212-374-5300 or 212-374-5370.

Stonewall 25: The mini-series. In The Life Productions and WNYC-TV, producers of public television's monthly lesbian and gay magazine series In The Life, will provide extensive coverage of the Stonewall 25 anniversary in a special hour-long broadcast, Stonewall 25: Global Voices of Pride and Protest. The special will combine lesbian and gay history, first-hand stories and reflections, and coverage of many of the hundreds of political, sporting and entertainment events scheduled for the celebration. The program will be uplinked on the PBS satellite on Sunday, June 26 at 11:30 pm, the date of the Stonewall 25 march and rally.

Stonewall Awards announced for 1994. Four leading national lesbian and gay activists have been honored with the 1994 Stonewall Awards. The honorees will receive $25,000 in recognition of their "achievement for gay and lesbian America.”

The four include Frank Kameny, a Washington, D.C. gay rights pioneer who founded the Mattachine Society of Washington, the nation's first gay rights group; Barbara Smith, black feminist writer and founder of the Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, the only U.S. publisher for women of color; Miriam Ben-Shalom, a Milwaukee high school teacher and former U.S. Army drill sergeant, now a prominent gay rights activist; and Rick Osborne, owner of a chic nonprofit San Diego coffee house that caters to people with AIDS and their social needs.

The awards were announced by the Anderson Prize Foundation, a fund set up by Chicago futures trader Paul A. Anderson in recognition of outstanding individual service to the lesbian and gay community. Anderson died of AIDS-related complications in 1992.
